Changsha Evening News—Palm Changsha, August 13th (Correspondent: Li Jiayu, All-Media Reporter: Zhou Huixia)—Whoever sets the standards holds the power. According to a report from Zoomlion, the company has recently led the revision and official publication of the international standard ISO 12480-1 "Cranes—Safe Use—Part 1: General". This marks the fourth international standard released under the leadership of Zoomlion, showcasing the deep technical expertise of Changsha's construction machinery in the crane sector. It also highlights Zoomlion's strong influence and leading position as an international standard-setter, further solidifying and enhancing China's voice in the global construction machinery industry.
ISO 12480-1, a fundamental safety standard in the crane industry, was first published in 1997, providing critical guidance for the safe development of the industry. However, as technology advances and the industry evolves rapidly, some aspects of the original standard have gradually become inadequate to meet current safety requirements. To address this, Zoomlion proposed revising the standard to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Crane Technical Committee (ISO/TC 96), which received unanimous support from the committee.
In August 2021, the revision of ISO 12480-1 began at the committee stage, with Yu Lihu, Assistant General Manager of Zoomlion's Construction Crane Machinery Division, serving as the project leader. A project team was formed, consisting of 24 top experts and scholars from countries including the United States, Germany, Japan, and Australia. Through in-depth research and integration of new technological advancements, as well as multiple rounds of extensive discussions on the application of the original standard across different countries and regions, the new standard was recently officially published. It provides more scientific, rational, and comprehensive guidance for the global crane industry's safe development.
The new standard introduces more detailed provisions on crane safety principles, especially regarding safe work systems, personnel responsibilities, crane maintenance, inspection, and condition monitoring, as well as special operations such as tandem lifting. Additionally, it comprehensively supplements the original standard with requirements for the safe use of new technologies such as remote control in cranes, further ensuring safety and efficiency during operations.
This is the fourth international standard in the construction machinery sector released under the leadership of Zoomlion. To date, Zoomlion has led or participated in the drafting and revision of 30 international standards, including leading the release of four and leading the research on eight others. Zoomlion is the first Chinese company in the industry to lead the drafting and revision of international standards and achieve official publication, and it holds the record for the highest number of standards published among Chinese companies.
